You spent six nights and seven days in some tropical paradise. There are hard drives full of photos of you drinking out of coconuts, glass boots, glass boats, naughty straws or all of the above. Not to mention those glorious (glorious!) up-to-the-minute photos of the final sunset you watched with your sweetheart over margaritas. You wish you were still there instead of wasting away in your cubicle, losing your tan.
The thing is ... we weren’t there. We probably don’t know most of the people and perhaps even some of the places in your photos. That means you have to make us care if you’re going to keep a photo log of your life (with Facebook photos, Picasa, or Flickr) and expect people to stay interested. So follow these rules of thumb, before 248 photos of an unidentifiable body of water end up clogging your online albums and loved ones’ mental space.

Depending on who you want to share with and what's the privacy level of your photos, you can choose sites like Facebook, Flickr or Picasa. For vacation specific photos, you can go to TripnTale which provides unlimited storage for all your travel photos and videos.
Now, now…
Don’t take this the wrong way, of course. Your online following of inner-circle friends and family certainly want to know the haps with you, particularly if it involves happy good times. But even your favorite sister-in-law across the country doesn’t want to see the contents of your entire 8-GB XD memory card.
Mix It Up
Thirty to 50 photos from a weekend trip is good. Maybe 60 to 80 for a long vacation. Even a hundred or so might be cool, if your photos are different enough from each other (and from everybody else's). Different enough from each other is the operative phrase here. The Pacific Ocean is gorgeous, but after 10 exceedingly similar photos of the damn thing, it gets less sexy. So does your photo album.
Quality
Ansel Adams most of us ain’t. But still there’s no need to put up all those blurry pictures or overexposed ones unless they ended up with an interesting visual effect or made your friend look hilarious. Also, orient and size your photos properly, or the losing-interest thing happens 10 times quicker.
Know your audience
If these are largely artsy photos of abstract still-life, flowers, odd-angled branches and star-filtered sunlight through the trees, your all-party, all-the-time crowd might get bored. If these are largely stunner photos of you smiling in groups, in pairs or by yourself, your audience — especially if many members thereof were not at said event — will lose interest even faster. You can’t please everyone, but try mixing it up to keep it interesting to the widest range of folks.
Exceptions
Exceptions include times when your Flickr or Picasa page are the go-to places for friends near and far to download the JPEG files of said photos. If grandma is living across the state now, you bet your ass she wants all those photos of Timmy’s first encounter with an apple. Speaking of, new parents and grandparents certainly get a break on the over-sharing. But don’t overstay your welcome.
Zoom in before you share
Seeing your pictures blown up on your computer screen (instead of on that deliciously detail-lacking LCD screen on your camera) might help you decide which photos are worth keeping for posterity and which ones are worth showing off to the world.
